SOAN PAPDI,India


日本に和菓子が有る様に、世界中に国民的菓子が有る。この菓子がインドの国民的菓子かどうかは知らないが、とにかく町中で良く目に付いたので買ってみた。そして店先でやおら袋を開け、さらに中の箱を開け、頬張ってみた。
思わず「甘っ!」と叫び、周りのインド人達に失笑を買ってしまった。
食の楽しみは奥深い、美味しいと言う平凡な価値を超えた文化を教えてくれる。
(因にこの菓子は日本でも買えるらしい!)

The cooking studio I go to offers cake course, which you can learn many of the western sweets like pies, sponge cakes, puddings, tartes and etc. It also offers wagashi course, which you can learn yokan, nerikiri, steamed cake and such. On the first day of the course, I got to my wagashi table and found only another participant, who is a woman from Thailand. Then, I look at the next table, there are full of young Japanese women for western sweets. So only two of were there making Japanese sweets speaking English language. Just as I realized how unpopular Japanese sweets are in its own country, I remembered about buying Indian sweets in India. Dried sugar cubes made of coco were everywhere in India, yet I saw none of them eating. An Indian lady laughed at me as I screamed, “AMAI!!(too sweet!!)” trying out the sugar cubes in front of a supermarket. Maybe they are also unpopular in India…they were very tasty and amai…
